I'm on a bit of a downer after having a smashing whirl-wind weekend away skiing.
Since our earlier ski trip to Tignes hubby and I had missed the slopes so much - sad that we'd have to wait another year until we'd be enjoying skiing again, so much to the kids disgust (they wanted to come too) we booked a cheeky weekend break to Valmorel in the French Alps.
Last Friday we drove down through France after an early (5.00am) Channel Tunnel crossing, arriving at the foot of the alp around 4pm. We started our descent up the mountain, wary of the brown, bland scenery that definitely lacked any snow. As we climbed the narrow road, we were eventually greeted by patchy snow that made way to full on snowy peaks, paths and roof tops. We found the Hotel and parked the car, enchanted by the sight of the quaint little town. It's central walk-way was covered in snow, and sparkly festive lights hung through the middle, I anticipated how pretty everything would look in the dark - it did, alas I didn't get any photos! At the far end of the town were trampolines and a fun merry-go-round - all for families with kids to be entertained. There were also plenty of ski hire outlets with everything you'd need for fun and safety on the slopes. We hired skis for a reasonable price prior to leaving & also purchased our ski passes in advance - which came in the post some weeks ago!
Enticing shops and restaurants lined the side walks, I looked forward to musing the menus to find the best places to eat and peruse the little shops selling cheese, wine and saucisson to take home.
Hubby found the hotel online. The Hotel Du Bourg, situated in the middle of the village was perfect. It was in just the right place. All the staff we eager to please, being helpful with everything from the best restaurants to book, to what ski runs to try, nothing was too much trouble and I can throughly recommend the rustic accommodation that also had a warm and inviting little bar complete with roaring fire.
Clutching my bag of locally produced cheese and Sausage.
The venue is ideal for families, with plenty of shops and takeaway options. Green, blue and red runs that are perfect for beginners or intermediate skiers also make the resort appealing too. Plenty of ski schools to occupy children - meaning parents can enjoy a peaceful & carefree few hours on the slopes too! We came across a local ski school on Saturday afternoon - all kids together much like we'd have gymnastic or judo clubs in the UK.
Our view after pizza and beer. We had a mixture of weather - from snow, rain, wind and sunshine. All in all a wonderful cheeky break just for the two of us!
Had a little glitch on this chairlift..... I'm on my own!!!!
Something went wrong with the direction of my skies, so hubby and I parted company! We travelled on the lift separately like we'd had a row! Lol
Back down to reality now - hoping Spring is just around the corner and some warmer weather is on the cards. Longing to wear my summery clothes - aren't you?

Fab time Tiina, and you are welcome. x
DeleteIt all looks so beautiful Jacqui but you'd never get me in one of those ski chairs! xx
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Laurie - David hates them although has got better on them. When the kids were young he used to put his poles across them and tell them not to move! I used to tell them not to travel on the lift with him - lol. x
DeleteI have never been skiing Jacqui. It does look like fun. Lovely photos. Thanks for hosting.
ReplyDeleteI love it Claire - you should give it a try! x
DeleteIt looks like a fabulous time, Jacqui! Much deserved, too. And your separate lift story gave me a good chuckle!

It was great Shelbee, I'll have to wait another year before i go again. x
DeleteLooks idyllic Jacqui, I tried skiing in my early 20s but was rubbish at it, plus I wouldn't go on chairlifts which limited the choice of resorts. I regret it now, I would probably like it as I'm more active than when I was in my 20s.
ReplyDeleteReally is a pretty place, and just perfect for our weekend away. x Thanks for stopping by and remember you're never too old to try something new. x
DeleteWhat a great getaway with your husband!
