How are you all doing?
I managed a little shopping last Tuesday, and picked up two dresses and a cute and sassy pair of trousers. I'll be showing them in the next few weeks, so do stop back as they're all very stylish.
You might recall me saying I'd sorted some of my clothes, so whilst going through my drawers folding and sorting it occurred to me that one outfit in particular stood out for the fact I've had it so long! Which led me to this blog post .....
What's the Oldest Thing you Own?
It seems few of us keep clothes over the years and even fewer keep or can find old photos in them! I'd asked a few blogging friends if they'd like to share in my post today, but many hadn't kept any clothes and the others didn't have or couldn't find any photos of them wearing them. Such a shame as it would have been really good to see some of you sporting your old pieces and even better if you're still wearing them now! - is it only me that finds it hard to get rid of old favourites? Do any of you still have any old items lurking around? Do you have any old photos featuring them? Please share if you do - don't make me feel alone - lol.
Back in the day (1980's) you possibly remember Club Sports or possibly Sam Suits? For those of you who don't they were toweling/velour tracksuits, shorts sets & even skirts, jackets or jumpsuits. They were very popular in London & surroundings and were seen on many trendy girls when casually dressed. My FIL decided to try his hand and started his own business JAB sports (his initials) and I had plenty of clothes and loved each and every one of them - but this is my favourite purely because it hasn't dated and still looks okay in the summer!
So this is one of the oldest things in my wardrobe, my beloved lilac shorts set. It's been on nearly every holiday I've been on and always without exception is worn EVERY summer, although now relegated to the grass cutting attire. I couldn't find the exact photo I wanted among the boxes I have stored. It's a picture outside our first house with two of the children, I had intended to take a photo in the same position, but as I couldn't find the photo there was no point!
This is rather poignant picture, because this is my daughter who's now in her 30's. We were in L'Escala at my FIL's villa, we went nearly every year with the children and visiting Spain is like going home, although I have to add every time we went it rained!!! Below that is my grand-daughter - her daughter at about the same age - how time flies when you're having fun living life!
I've somewhat filled this short set out over the years, and even though it's had a few new lengths of elastic through the waist band it still looks as good as new! The kids hate me wearing it, but I'm reluctant to get rid of it because it holds lots of memories for me, and hey if I can still fit into it - then what's the rush - lol!
This photo literally melts my heart - there's just nothing like having grandkids, they make life worth living. xxxx

ReplyDeleteGreat to have you here Nancy - thanks so much. x
DeleteOh I remember the Club Sports! Me and mum wore them constantly! I so wish I still had some of that stuff. That's a beautiful photo of you and the grandaughter Jacqui. xx
ReplyDeleteSweet isn't it Laurie, I wish I had more pieces - they work really well over the years. x
DeleteWhat a cute set! It's nice you've kept it so long and have the photo to look back on! I have a vintage bag that's 20-something years old but I didn't own it all that time, I bought it preloved. i think that's the oldest thing in my wardrobe though!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the link up!
Hope you're having a great week :)
Away From Blue
Thanks so much for stopping by Mica. Nice to have kept something so long, especially when they are such good quality. x
DeleteWell you still look amazing in it! And it's proved itself as a keeoer.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could have joined you; as you know, I had a dress in mind from 1986 but could I find it? So annoying as I have a photo of it when I wore it to my bro's wedding that year, and even more annoying as I had it on a few years ago.
Now, get out there and mow your lawn in your super 80s set, then wear it out for lunch because it's definitely worthy of more than just gardening!
Hugs, Mary x.

Thanks Mary, we'll get together over something else instead! Thanks for stopping by. x
DeleteJacqui, it is such a great little short set. No wonder you have saved it for so long. And I meant to send you something but time got away from me. I am so sorry. I do have a winter coat, my go-to winter coat that was given to me by my ex-mother-in-law before I even married my ex-husband. We were married in 1998. So the coat pre-dates that. Maybe I received it around 1996. And I still wear it every winter and continue to get compliments on it. I have definitely worn it on the blog so I will have to find a post and link it up!

Thanks so much for linking that post - I remember how lovely that tunic was, and the boots are fabulous too! x
DeleteI have to go search my closet now, I do have a dress lefover from University days from Benetton, that is probably my oldest piece. That was purchased in 1984 lol
ReplyDeleteBe nice to see it Linda, maybe do a post on it for us?? x
DeleteWow! Those are holding up well! The red shorts I am wearing in that river picture are about 10 years old but I think that is about how old my oldest clothes are. As we have moved over the years, things have been donated or gotten rid of.
ReplyDeletewww.chezmireillefashiontravelmom.com
Many thanks for stopping by, I wish I'd kept loads more bits as I reckon I could fit into a lot more now-a-days!! xx
DeleteI wore a jacket that I bought in Tchibo. Does that count? I have a bag that is 30 years old. That is my oldest that I bought when it was new.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely Anna, Nice to keep these things. Will it go on the blog? x
DeleteOk Jaqui, that's amazing. That you have a photo of yourself from when your daughter was little wearing the short set and then on to another photo with you and your grandbaby is fabulous. Let's hear it for lilac shorts and all our favorite momentos.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for stopping by and leaving your lovely comments. x
DeleteRight now I'm wearing a t-shirt that I bought in the mid 1990s at a thrift store! :)
ReplyDeleteWow, nice to hear - well done. Do stop by again. x
DeleteI have a few things that are several years old but nothing as far back as your cute set! Love seeing your throwback photo!
ReplyDeleteJill - Doused in Pink
Many thanks for joining me today Jill. Nice comments. x
DeleteI love this story and heck yeah, wear it if it still fits. The memories are awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteXO
Awe thank you Lisa, kind comments. x
DeleteThat is such a great little short set. I know there's certain items of clothing I could never part with. I learnt a big lesson a few years when I parted with a few things that I immediately regretted - hence much more careful now. Love the photograph of you with your granddaughter.
ReplyDeleteAlison xx
I always keep favorite clothes, either for sentimental reasons or because they are still in good shape and still fit. I have things stashed away from my late teens (that's over 20 years ago). I can see why you've kept this set. It looks so comfortable!
ReplyDeleteEllibelle's Corner
Thanks it's very comfortable and a real favourite of mine. x
DeleteI have gone through my closet each year, so I do give to charity things that are older that I don't wear anymore, so I don't have very old pieces. This is awesome Jacqui and I loved reading about the picture you posted. Great to keep an item that brings back such memories and it still looks great!

DeleteWell it is no wonder why you have held onto this set, it looks so comfy! This is definitely something I would hold onto. I think maybe one of the oldest things I have is a grey jersey jumpsuit, it is such a go-to for me!! I love these photos!!

Too kind, many thanks for joining me today Elise. x
DeleteThat is so amazing that you have the same outfit and can still wear it! If I had something from the 80s it wouldn't fit me now. I do remember the track suit days from way back--I had a pretty fancy designer one--haha!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for joining me Kim. x
DeleteThat outfit is a classic! The oldest things in my wardrobe weren't even originally mine - in fact, tomorrow's post will have a sweater that belonged to my mum and then to me and I've had it since I was a teen! I'll make sure to link it up tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteThanks for featuring me as well! What a riot to see my pic!

DeleteI do have stuff going back quite a long time! I especially love to hang on to a great dress and will often wear something from 5 - 10 years back. You've got me thinking now, I will have to see. I have the outfit I wore when I met my husband 30 years ago ... and I have a classic black velvet waistcoat my mum bought me x
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining me today - I'll look forward to seeing your waistcoat. x
DeleteCute! Love your sporty casual style!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Laura. x
DeleteI still have a bunch of pieces that I bought at sample sales in NYC when I was in my early 20s—I think they can almost be considered vintage by now! :)

It's nice to find old favourites isn't it! Many thanks Anna. x
DeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one who has outfits that are considered "grass cutting attire"...lol! If you still love it you should definitely keep it. I have several things that I hold onto for purely sentimental reasons.

Lol, you are not alone. Thanks for joining me today. x
DeleteOh what a good question. It's hard to think of that. I think the oldest thing I own is an old faux chinchilla fur coat. It's just so beautiful, and although I never wear it anymore it's fun to have around for photo shoots. I used to direct plays and I used it as a costume for those too. It has a lot of memories, so I can't bear to part with it.
ReplyDeleteNice to hear you have something. Glad you stopped by today. x
DeleteOh it's a shame you didn't - what it would be to have hindsight Julie. x
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post, Nancy. How special that you found photos of you in that shorts outfit with both your daughter and granddaughter! I have lots of old clothes that I keep recycling so it's hard to determine the oldest! I do have a lime green cropped sweatshirt from a local surf shop that I've had hanging around forever, so maybe that's it! Thanks for sharing,

ReplyDeleteJacqui, I have lots of pieces that are 20 years old that I still wear--high quality, well made, classic pieces. Every item of clothing I own is hanging in my closet, so I keep it pretty much pared down to what I actually wear. BUT I had one dress taking up space that I was never going to wear again but couldn't part with. It was a long, pale blue, beautiful dress in wonderful condition that still fit me, but would not suit a woman my age! I had bought it when I was 18 or 19 and just gave it away a couple years ago--I had bought it in 1971! I doubt that anyone can top that.
ReplyDeleteNice to hear, thanks so much for stopping by Hun. x
DeleteIt's certainly lasted well Jacqui, you've obviously looked after it! I've been trying to think of something to share with you - I've got loads of really old clothes and shoes but no photos of me wearing them. I was quite camera shy in my 20s...not surprising really given my terrible hair back then! I'll keep looking though!
